First Year
Junior Cycle begins in First Year. Here in Coláiste Cholmcille, we believe it is essential that students have the opportunity to try as many subjects as possible before they choose which subjects they wish to focus on. That is why every First Year student is given a sample of each subject available in our school, including Wood Technology, Visual Art and Home Economics.
Second & Third Year
Having experienced all the subjects in First Year, students decide which subjects they want to study in Second and Third Year, following discussion with their parents and teachers.
Assessment in Junior Cycle
Students will complete one classroom based assessment (CBA) per year for each subject. The results of the CBA will be added to their Profile of Achievement, which they received once they have completed Junior Cycle.
Students will also sit a state exam in most of their subjects at the end of third year.
Other Areas of Learning
A new development in the Junior Cycle is the introduction of Other Areas of Learning. During their time in school, students often become involved in a wide range of activities which allow them to develop new skills which are not acknowledged by CBAs or exams. The Other Areas of Learning section of the Profile of Achievement allows students to permanently record their achievements or their contribution to school projects.
